Interest in free school lunches is growing in the Czech Republic. The state increases its support for parents in difficult life circumstances. Classroom teachers help identify children who need help. “Maybe the child does not bring snacks. Or the teachers see that he does not have school supplies. At the moment, this is also the case with families where we do not expect them to have economic problems,” notes Ilona Razlova, an educational consultant from Novi Mesto nad Mitoji.

They get money for needy lunches at this school from a non-profit organization women for women. Last school year, I helped pay for lunches for nearly 13,000 children across the Czech Republic.

This year there will be more, assures board member Olga Shaper-Grylova. “The situation for low-income families is getting significantly worse, and the average price of school lunch is increasing. So far we have more than nine and a half thousand support requests and new ones are still coming in.

So this organization will pay about twenty million kroner more than last year for lunches for schoolchildren. Partly thanks to private donors, but it also receives support from the Ministry of Education.

The ministry’s spokeswoman, Eva Davydova, confirms the funds for school lunches: “This year it amounted to 137 million kroner, double what it was last year. All 14 regions have expressed interest in expanding their projects.

When applying for this state support, the family’s financial need is a requirement. Parents who need assistance can apply for it until the end of September.
