Peugeot has released details of the electric 380. Battery drive is offered in both hatchbacks and station wagons. This is the first time in the European market. Both versions are coming next year, bringing with them more efficient technology: batteries with less cobalt content and more economical engines. Combined with good aerodynamics, it should result in a power consumption of 12.7 kWh/100 km. This means a range of 400 km for him with a capacity of 51 kWh.

The number of electric vehicles equipped with SUV bodies is increasing. Above the floor battery, the manufacturer gains more height space, but with one stone he costs two birds. Aerodynamics get worse and the trunk gets smaller. As with all fashion, SUVs are primarily for aesthetic purposes, and an unusually long rear doesn’t do the trick.

Peugeot has a long tradition in the station wagon genre and has enjoyed success in the Czech Republic. Now it’s also being electrified first as a result of a conservative product policy. A battery-only chassis platform is being prepared, but for the time being, the conventional model will be equipped with an electric drive.

However, although the E-308’s parameters look promising, this applies not only to the 600-liter trunk. Under the hood comes a new motor from his venture, a joint venture between Stellantis and the specialist firm Nidec Leroy-Sommer, which combines permanent magnets and the reluctance principle. This should be reflected in lower consumption than the previous Peugeot e-208 and e-2008.

The economy of the drive relies on relatively modest capacity batteries – 54 kWh total, of which 51 kWh are usable. Similar to the e-208 type, it is stored under the rear seats and part of the trunk. will be .

A new cell chemistry reduces the severely deficient cobalt content to 10%. However, the displayed charging power of 100 kilowatts remains the same. Not only does it take 25 minutes to charge from 20% to 80%, it actually means the power drops to 50 kilowatts after reaching 60% capacity.

The total consumption promise for the WLTP cycle of 12.7 kWh/100 km is surprisingly low. That’s 20% less than his 54kWh battery-powered Volkswagen ID.3 in the middle. In addition to the efficient engine, it reflects the lower body of the car with better aerodynamics.

On the other hand, with most of the weight on the rear axle, one would expect a dynamic penalty from the front-wheel drive when fully occupied. In the case of the Peugeot 308, however, it is reduced by the unusual arrangement of a very long wheelbase, wheels “in the trunk” and short overhangs.

The E-308 model is expected to go on sale in mid-2023. The manufacturer has not yet released a closer date, base price, or specs. His sister car, the Opel Astra-e, is likely to launch around the same time.
