The US Geological Survey said seismologists recorded the latest tremors around 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. CET) south of Chua Lin city on the island’s east coast. The 5.5-magnitude tremors were also felt in Taipei, the island’s capital.

Since Saturday, the earthquake has hit the sparsely populated southeastern region of Taiwan. A 6.9-magnitude earthquake on Sunday noon shook roads and homes in the city of Yuli, killing at least one person. Rescuers had to free four other people from under the rubble of the collapsed building. According to the authorities, 146 people were injured.

Taiwan is located at the interface of two plates of the lithosphere, so seismic activity is not unusual here. In 2016, more than 100 people died in earthquakes that struck the south of the island. A 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
